Emergency Fire Response Procedures

An emergency fire response plan can save lives when a fire occurs.  Chaos and confusion can reign when a fire threatens your employees and business.  A detailed and rehearsed emergency fire response plan is the best way to prevent this from happening.  By providing your employees with the proper evacuation training, they will be able to leave the office quickly in the case of any emergency.

Fire and evacuation alarms are intended to alert building occupants that a fire or other life-threatening situation exists. Upon hearing the alarm, everyone should leave the building immediately. In the event of a fire, the following steps should be taken to ensure the safety of all building occupants:

  1. Activate the nearest fire alarm.
  1. Call 911 immediately and provide information about your location and where the fire is located.
  1. If there is smoke in the area, stay as low as possible while exiting.
  1. Be sure to check closed doors for heat before opening.
  1. Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
  1. Exit the building following emergency maps which are posted throughout the building.
  1. Assist physically impaired or injured personnel if possible, to a secure area and notify emergency responders.
  1. Do not use the elevators.
  1. Report hazardous conditions.
  1. Ensure all personnel are out of the building.
  1. Assemble personnel at a remote location noted on evacuation maps.
  1. Stay away from the building until notified that it is safe to return.

Use a fire extinguisher only if safe to do so and you have been trained. If the fire appears no larger than a trash can, and you feel confident that you can put the fire out then use a fire extinguisher.  If the fire becomes bigger, evacuate the building immediately.
